  Message from the Editor

Welcome to the inauguration issue of Digital Media Center (DMC) eNews! This newsletter is published to bring you the latest news of the DMC, new facilities, services, events, promotions and productions. You may also find this informative on what¡¦s happening on the multimedia production both in Hong Kong and around the world, so you will never miss a beat from the exciting multimedia world! In this issue, we will introduce to you the DMC and the person at the helm; and major highlights of the grand opening which took place on March 29. We will also give you a glimpse of business arrangements formed recently.

 

DMC Highlights

Dr. Krates Ng - Centre Manager of DMC

Digital content creation has emerged as one of the important development areas of the ICT industry. A world-class technological centre with top of the line equipment, facilities and resources, the DMC provide content producers world-class technologies for quality digital content creation. ¡§Creative talents of local producers are well recognized by the industry worldwide. Before joining the DMC, Dr. Ng was a senior lecturer at the Vocational Training Council¡¦s Tsing Yi campus, spearheading the introduction of digital entertainment technologies in Hong Kong. He was a Director of Research and Development at Hong Kong¡¦s leading entertainment production outfit, Centro Digital Pictures Ltd. which produced the blockbuster movie "Shaolin Soccer" (¤ÖªL¨¬²y); and Assistant Professor of the School of Communication at Hong Kong Baptist University.

Technology Exchange

DMC signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)s with academia institutions

DMC signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hong Kong Baptist University. This represents DMC formed exchange partnership with HKBU to enhance systematic development of multimedia creative courses to fuel further development of the industry. http://www.hkbu.edu.hk/

Similar partnership arrangements are also being established with Caritas Information Technology Advancement Centre to ensure multimedia courses development supports industry demand through signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). http://www.citac.edu.hk/

Exchange of visions and interests with Nicole and Norbert Corsino of N + N Corsino.

Nicole, the choreographer, and Norbert, once a mathematician, have a poetic and sensual approach to multimedia and their collaboration with engineers and computer specialists.

"Topologies of the Instant - Digital Installation of N + N Corsino"is now exhibiting at the Hong Kong Museum of Art.

Business Matching

Cyberport signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Internet Professionals Association of Hong Kong and the ARC Research Studios, the research division of the Austrian Research Centers-ARC GmbH; on cooperation to strengthen collaboration in scientific and professional research, development, commercialization, exchange, education, and fostering of technology and business partnerships in the e-Entertainment arena between Europe and Asia.

The objective of the MOU is to establish a management framework for collaboration in a series of complementary projects related to the field of smart media, e-Entertainment, mobile entertainment, digital contents, games and other applications related developments.

1. International ICT Expo 14-17 April 2004


Many visitors attended DMC¡¦s presentation section at the International ICT Expo and were very much impressed with DMC¡¦s facilities.

  3D scanning presentation

DMC participated in the Cyberport booth at the ICT trade show of the year, the International ICT Expo held at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre on April 14-17, 2004. DMC¡¦s 3D Scanning system was exhibited and amazed many of the twenty-one thousand visitors who came to the event. A full-house audience was very much impressed by the DMC¡¦s advance and robust facilities when they were introduced in the presentation session.

2. Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum 23 April 2004

Some of the world's leading experts in the field of digital multimedia graced the Digital Entertainment Leadership Forum (DELF), the biggest global gathering of the digital media industry held on Friday, 23 April 2004, at Hong Kong Cyberport. DELF featured a group of the world's most influential digital media experts from the US and Asia, including talents behind such major productions and hot games as "ANTZ", "Hero", "Indiana Jones", "Jurassic Park", "Shaolin Soccer", "Star Wars", "The Hulk", "The Suffering"; and attended by hundreds of participants who shared their visions and expertise.

Designed to nurture local IT and multimedia talents, DELF showcased exciting interstitial videos of Xbox game trailers and an interview with Ellen Poon, the heroine behind the movie, "Hero". 3. Global ICT Summit 11-15 May 2004

DMC provided and managed all audio/visual set up required for the one week renowned international Information and Communications Technology (ICT) event which took place at multiple locations in Cyberport, including recording materials and technical support for live video webcast to the world via RTHK on internet.

 


4. Web Care Award & Web Site Design Competition Award Presentation Ceremony 15 May 2004

Sponsored by Cyberport, the Cyberport Tenants Club organized a ¡§Website Design Competition¡¨ with the aim to groom future IT talents in Hong Kong. A joint award presentation ceremony was held at House 1 of Broadway Cyberport on May 15, 2004 for the Competition together with iProA - Web Care Award 2004.

A full team of A/V technicians from DMC provided on-site support for audio and visual equipment setting, materials recording, system-control and showreel production for these events.

 
 
 


DMC in Media Coverage

1. Digital Media Centre featured in TVB8¡¦s ¡§New Products, New Horizon¡¨ (¡§·s³f·s¤Ñ¦a¡¨)

The Cyberport Digital Media Center was featured in a special edition of TVB8¡¦s ¡§New Products, New Horizons¡¨ on April 30, 2004. In this special feature, the infotainment program covered DMC¡¦s advanced facilities like motion capture system and studio with virtual set system.

Technology Watch

At its Multimedia Lab, the Digital Media Centre offers motion capture services via their Visualeyez? VZ4000 Tracking System from PhoeniX Technologies Incorporated. The system is based on active-optical technology, and captures the 3D position of the subject as s/he goes through her/his motion. The system allows the capture of complete, real time, full-body motion of one or multiple characters for use in game development, special effects projects, virtually hosted TV programs, as well as various scientific research applications. It is the fastest active-optical, 3D real-time motion capture system currently available in the market with high accuracy. Processed data from the system can be exported in real-time to many industry standard animation and scientific applications, including Maya, 3D Studio Max, Visual3D, etc. Together with 3D Scanning, high performance workstations in the Multimedia Lab, content producers will enjoy creative freedom never experienced before.

Target audience of the program is the mass public around the world. ¡§Trendy Guide¡¨ is a trendy program which covers the latest trends in different aspects, including fashion, design, IT and consumer products. The IT program is broadcasted every Wednesday night and mainly introduces new consumer products and covers technology features of lifestyle.
