I. INTRODUCTION
Cyberport Speaker Series (CSS) is a novel event providing an opportunity for successful business leaders and practitioners with visionary break-through in digital entertainment to share their insights and experience with industry practitioners and the general public. The series also creates great networking opportunities for industry practitioners to develop business collaboration.
Commencing from 8 November 2005, the series is planned to be held on a bi-quarterly/quarterly basis.
Join this unique CSS if you are in digital entertainment, IT, film and creative industries as marketers, retailers, advertisers, content creators, technology providers, game publishers, developers, researchers or students.
Co-organized by Hong Kong Cyberport and supported by Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, Hong Kong Digital Entertainment Industry Support Centre, Hong Kong Productivity Council, Hong Kong Trade Development Council and InvestHK.

Dr. Daniel Lee CTO/Director of Operations, North Asia Yahoo! N. Asia |
Dr. Daniel Lee was born in Hong Kong. He received the B.S. degree (with Distinction) from Cornell University, Ithaca, NY, in 1973 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1975 and 1980, respectively, all in Electrical Engineering. He also completed the Executive Development Program at Kellog School of Management, Northwestern University in 1995.
His research career started at Stanford Information Systems Laboratory he was a Research Associate from 1976 to 1979 where he conducted research on Signal Processing and Distributed Sensors Networks, a project that was funded by ARPA as part of the early efforts towards the building of the Internet.
He joined IBM Research at the San Jose Research Lab in 1979 and conducted research in the areas of Image and Data Compression. In 1981, he joined HP Labs in Palo Alto, California and led a number of research projects on image compression, document image processing and image processing workstations.
In 1987, he took on an assignment from HP to work at the Advanced Telecommunications Research (ATR), in Kyoto, Japan, as a Research Scientist where he conducted research on Virtual Reality and 3D Visual Communications. In 1991, he started a research team at HP Labs Japan in Tokyo as a member of the founding management team that started the first HP Labs in Japan.
He returned to HP Labs in 1993 and has held a number of management positions at HP, including Manager of Imaging Technology at HP Labs. In 1998, he led a small group of technical staffs from HP Labs to start an internal startup business in HP in imaging software business. He became the Director of R&D of HP Internet Imaging Operation and developed the HP OpenPix Imaging software products. In 1999, his team started the Cartogra photos hosting services, which hosted photos for HP and other Internet business like Excite.
In 2000, he joined Yahoo! to become the CTO/Technical Director of the Asia region where he was responsible for building up the regional infrastructures and technical management team. He oversaw the development of Yahoo! datacenters and infrastructures in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and India during the early stage of Yahoo!’s expansion to the Asia region. He was in charge of technical integrations of key Yahoo! acquisitions including Kimo.com in Taiwan, 2001 and 3721.com in China in 2003. Most recently, he is in charge of technical integration in the strategic partnership between Yahoo! and Alibaba.com in China.
On the professional side, he has been serving as the Convener of the ISO/IEC JTC1 SC29/WG1 – JPEG Standards Committee, a position he has held since 1996. As the convener, he has led a group of over 100 experts from over 18 countries that developed the ISO JPEG 2000 family of imaging standard that has been adopted by many groups in the imaging industry, including most recently the Digital Cinema group. For the contributions that JPEG made to the industry, the committee received the EMMY award.
