I. About the Camp
The Cyberport Animation Camp is an event supported and sponsored by the Office of the Government Chief Information Officer, HKSAR and organized by Hong Kong Cyberport. It is an event consists of:

  • animation seminar session
  • a series of professional level of workshops
  • animation making class for kids and youth
  • animation screening
  • vendors exhibition, etc.

Objectives of the Camp are to :

  • Provide opportunities for learning from the global leading animation experts
  • Foster development of new skills and knowledge upgrade
  • Cultivate local creative economy through sharing experience and giving exposure to overseas well establish digital animation application
  • Nurture the future animation leaders and professionals of digital entertainment industries
  • Spearhead the growth and development of the digital entertainment industry in Hong Kong
  • Boost the public interest for the fun, trend and development of creative technology
  • Encourage the next generation to participant in digital entertainment development

III. Instructors
Instructors: Mr. Andrew Gordon, Mr. Ricky Nierva, Mr. Rob Gibbs

Andrew Gordon, Animator, Pixar Animation Studios
Andrew Gordon has been animating characters professionally for over ten years. He joined Pixar Animation Studios in 1997 where he has been an animator on A Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, Monsters, Inc, Finding Nemo and The Incredibles.

The characters he has worked on include Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Gill, from finding Nemo and Edna Mode, the costume designer in "The Incredibles." He is currently in production on a film due out in 2007

Mr. Gordon studied animation in Vancouver and NY, and prior to his work at Pixar, he worked in the Looney Tunes division of Warner Brothers. He was recently awarded "Outstanding Character Animation in an Animated Motion Picture" by the Visual Effects Society for his work in Finding Nemo.

He is currently a teacher at the Academy of Art in San Francisco where his students have gone on to become animators at all the top studios. He has lectured on subjects relating to animation in China, Singapore, NYU, and various other venues. Andrew has also been involved with CSU Summer Arts program as a guest artist for over 6 years.

Ricky Vega Nierva, Art Director, Pixar Animation Studios
Ricky Nierva is the youngest of five kids and grew up in San Diego, California. He attended Daniel Boone Elementary, Bell Junior High, and Morse High School. After a year at UCSD, he attended California Institute of the Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Character Animation in 1994.

Ricky was very fortunate to work closely with the legendary Disney and Warner Brothers art director and designer, Maurice Noble, early in his career, who helped develop the style Ricky uses today. Ricky has worked at several studios including Turner, Warner Brothers, Hanna Barbera and Baer Animation. In 1997, he joined the Pixar animation team as a visual development artist.

Ricky also did additional storyboarding on "Toy Story 2," was the lead character designer for "Monster's Inc.," and was the Character Art Director for "Finding Nemo." He won an Annie award for best character Design in an animated feature.

Having recently illustrated a children's book published by Random House, titled "'M' is for Monster," Ricky's artwork is also featured in, "The Art of Monster's Inc." and "The Art of Finding Nemo," published by Chronicle Books.

He is currently on the development team for a future top-secret Pixar film. He lives with his wonderful wife, Angie, two dogs, and a turtle in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Rob Gibbs, Storyboard Artist, Pixar Animation Studios
Rob Gibbs currently works at Pixar as a storyboard artist. Rob has worked on Pixar films Monsters Inc., Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo, Cars and shorts Mike's New Car and Jack Jack Attack. Before Pixar Rob worked at Disney Feature Animation as a story artist on Pocahontas and Fantasia 2000.

Rob attended school at California Institute of the Arts in 1989-1990. Rob began teaching at Cal Arts and continues teaching a story class at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

Workshops/Class: Character Design, Features Animation, Story, Animation Making for Kids/Youth

Workshop: Characters Design
Objectives: To introduce, discuss, study and exercise the basic skills involved in creating characters for any type of animation
Format: Lecture and exercises
Target participants: Experienced animation developers
Note: Although draftsmanship is a large component of character design, this class will focus on sharpening your observation skills
Outline:

Workshop: Story
Objectives: To introduce, discuss, study and exercise the basic skills involved in the story design and the effect that has on the overall story for any type of animation

  • Components of story (exposition, insighting incident, conflict, crisis/climax, and resolution)
  • Staging for storyboards
  • Making clear storyboard drawings
  • Visual clues, how to put them together

Workshop: Features Animation
Objectives: To introduce, discuss, study and exercise the basic skills involved in the animating characters and story and the effect that has on the overall story for any type of animation
Format: Lecture and exercises
Target participants: Experienced animation developers

Class: Animation Making for Kids/Youth
Objectives: To introduce basic concept of making an animation and allow participants to experience how to use the off-the-shelf software, Flash, to create an animation.

Target participants: Kids and Youth with little or no experience of creating animation (age from 5 to 17)
