Collaborating for Success
Since our establishment more than 10 years ago, we have
developed a far-reaching network of alliances, cooperative
arrangements and strategic partnerships. We formed this
network to stimulate the entrepreneurial spirit of new ICT
talents and to foster a thriving start-up ecosystem within Hong
Kong and throughout the region. It provides opportunities for
our incubatees and start-ups to learn about the culture of other
companies and markets as well as exchange technical ideas and
talent in an environment of mutual support.
As these young companies begin to mature, this network will
provide additional opportunities for funding and expansion into
new markets. Partnerships include those with government
bodies, investors, start-up communities, IT associations and
educational institutions, not just in Hong Kong but in other
markets as well, particularly in the Mainland and Silicon valley in
the uS.
In Mainland, we worked with partners in Guangzhou, Shanghai
and Beijing to support a number of joint activities. These
included “SmartHK 2013 in Guangzhou”, “TechCrunch
Shanghai 2013”, “Shanghai-Hong Kong Hackathon”, “Cloud
Connect China and Game Developers Conference” in Shanghai,
and “ChinaBang Awards 2014” in Beijing. As a result of these
initiatives, we were able to connect Hong Kong start-ups with
entrepreneurs, investors and accelerators in the Mainland to
explore business opportunities and establish a presence in the
market.
In Hong Kong, we held close to 100 events during the review
period, including the launch of “Global Entrepreneurship Week
(GEW) China — Hong Kong” as a pilot programme. Highlights
of GEW included the “Hong Kong Launch Ceremony cum
Cyberport Demo Day”, “Cyberport Hackathon 2013”,
“Guangdong-Hong Kong ICT Young Entrepreneurship
Programme 2013 Boot Camp” and “Cyberport Startup Alumni
Association Annual Gathering cum Closing Ceremony of GEW
2013”. All of these activities were designed to inspire creative
ideas among participants and take them to the next level in
their entrepreneurial journey.
In the uS, we built on our well-established network by forming
new partnerships with leading investors and industry players,
and participated prominent industry gatherings such as
TechCrunch Disrupt Sf 2013 in San francisco, where we
introduced Hong Kong ICT start-ups to global investors. The
global network is vital for start-ups, one of our incabatees,
Openball succeeded in raising uS$750,000 in angel funds after
the uS ICT delegation.
